The Dream
I had the dream perhaps around winter early 2004. Not sure exactly. In it I was
in a class on magic. The other studentswere young girls, all part fairy and part human. We were
taking a test, a pop quiz, and I was having trouble with it until I realized that the key was in
my bubblegum--in particular in the color coding in the Fruity Sticks. I wondered if it was
cheating, it seemed so easy. As I took out each color of stick of gum, I was shown a thing (in my
head, like a vision in the dream) that represented each answer. On the paper for the test I merely
wrote down the colors' name.
Towards the end of the test the paper seemed to be getting smaller and
smaller. I dropped the pen when I realized I was floating. Still in the
tall classroom, I rose higher and higher, my long black skirts and
dreadlocks billowing as if there was a soft wind coming from underneath
the room.
When I got towards the top of the ceiling I looked across and saw a
large oval gilt mirror hanging on the wall opposite me. As I saw my
reflection the colors of the gum and of the magic colored my hair and
my dress, one after another after another. Black naturally, then slowly
from head to toe, my hair and dress and skirts turned—white,
grey, blue, purple, black, red, orange, yellow, green, brown. Then
finally one last time, to a very pale white. My hair, my skirts, all
deathly white. My eyes, black.
I drifted back to the floor slowly. The girls were all looking at me,
pale and wide-eyed. The teacher backed away, left the classroom. I
looked down at my test and there was an “A+” marked
on it, with a comment “How did you get these answers?
They’re all very correct but I’m
puzzled.” I was still all white, nearly an albino other than
my black eyes. I walked away from the classroom into the sunshine with a feeling of power.
I woke feeling I’d had a magical lesson. I wasn't
sure in my waking state what but did feel I had to illustrate it, somehow.
I wrote down ideas and numbers and corresponding magical and Kabalistic
and practical terms, all interrelated. It took me a good deal of
research and work, thinking and revising and redoing, but finally,
finally I was happy with the results.
I then brought home ten glass jars, took off their labels, cleaned
them. Assigned each its task of ideas and symbols. Drew the
corresponding symbol on each one. Found appropriate objects to place in
each. Painted the tops of each one white, black or silver, as fit.
Filled each (except two) with isopropyl alcohol, or water, and color. I
will find lights to light up the back of each one, so it glows with
intensity. And take photos, so y’all can see for yourself
what beauty they are.
